OnlineConverter is free and upload-based. Five alternatives for QuickTime MOV, split by local vs server, with public limits checked on 23 October 2026.

Checked: 23 October 2026 · vendor pages · movtomp3.co live conversion

Verdict

For an iPhone or Mac MOV you do not want to upload, the browser tool is the shortest route. For an unusual codec or a very large camera file, a server or ffmpeg is the safer answer.

Short answer

OnlineConverter is free and upload-based; it says it uses FFmpeg and refuses encrypted or protected files. Alternatives for a MOV are this browser tool (local, multi-track selection), CloudConvert/FreeConvert/Zamzar (server-side breadth) and ffmpeg (local automation). Choose based on privacy, codec coverage and whether the MOV has more than one audio track.

Tool Runs Free limit Best for Not for
movtomp3.co Browser tab No daily count; device memory iPhone/Mac MOV, multi-track audio, no upload AC-3/DTS, DRM, URL input, server API
CloudConvert Servers 10 conversions/day; 1 GB/file; 5 min/job Broad codecs, server-side batch A file that must not be uploaded
FreeConvert Servers 20 conversion minutes/day; 5 min/file Server-side batch, broad format list A long file on the free tier
Zamzar Servers 50 MB general; 2 files/24h An occasional small clip A 4 GB camera file
ffmpeg Desktop / CLI Free, no service limit Automation, VBR, unusual codecs, huge files Anyone who does not want a command line

Why people look for an OnlineConverter alternative

OnlineConverter is free and broad. The reasons to look elsewhere are specific:

OnlineConverter’s own homepage is clear that it is an upload service, that it refuses encrypted/protected files, and that its backend includes FFmpeg. That is a legitimate design. It is just a different one from a local converter.

Disclosure

This site is one of the tools in the list. We built it, so this is not a neutral review. We disclose that and list the cases where another tool is better. No affiliate links, no paid placements.

How we picked

We kept tools that can convert a MOV to MP3 and compared:

  1. Where the conversion runs (browser, server, desktop).
  2. The public free limit on 23 October 2026.
  3. Whether the file is uploaded.
  4. Multi-track support (or at least a clear statement of what it does).
  5. Codec coverage.
  6. Output control (bitrate, channels, sample rate, trim).

We did not run timed benchmarks. We did not test every codec combination.

The shortlist in one paragraph each

movtomp3.co is the browser option for QuickTime MOV. It drops the video track without decoding it, lists every audio track, and writes MP3 locally. No upload, no account, no daily count. The limits are browser codecs and device memory. It is the best fit for iPhone/Mac MOVs, multi-track interviews and private recordings. It refuses AC-3/DTS/DRM.

CloudConvert is the server-side breadth option. Its free tier is 10 conversions/day, 1 GB per file and 5 minutes per job. It is better for a codec the browser cannot decode or a batch that must run on a server. It uploads the file.

FreeConvert is the server-side batch option. The free tier is 20 conversion minutes/day with a 5-minute cap per file; paid plans start at $12.99/month. It is better for a long file on a weak device, or a server-side batch. It uploads the file.

Zamzar is the small-file option: 50 MB general, 2 files per 24 hours. It is fine for a short iPhone clip and not for a 4 GB camera file.

ffmpeg is the local control option. It handles unusual codecs, VBR and huge files, and it can select a specific audio stream with -map 0:a:1. The cost is a command line and an install.

What we did not test

A list like this is a map of public limits and architecture, not a lab report.

Who should not use this site

The browser tool is the wrong choice when:

Those are jobs for ffmpeg, a server service or a desktop editor.

Which one fits

Job Better choice
iPhone MOV, private, one file movtomp3.co
Multi-track interview MOV movtomp3.co
A codec the browser cannot decode CloudConvert, FreeConvert or ffmpeg
A 4 GB ProRes file ffmpeg or a paid server plan
A short clip on a phone Zamzar or movtomp3.co

The QuickTime trap

QuickTime Player’s File → Export As → Audio Only writes an M4A/AAC file, not MP3. Apple documents this. A two-step M4A→MP3 route works, but it adds a file. The browser tool reads the MOV directly and writes MP3 in one step. If the MOV has multiple tracks, it lets you pick one instead of guessing.

Verdict

For an iPhone or Mac MOV you do not want to upload, the browser tool is the shortest route. For an unusual codec or a very large camera file, a server or ffmpeg is the safer answer.

The question is not which service is “best”. It is whether the file can leave the device, and whether the audio track is the one you think it is.

FAQ

Is OnlineConverter free?

Its homepage says all converters are completely free for personal, work and company use. It also says the tool does not support encrypted or protected files and only converts files the user uploads. Check its terms and privacy page for the current conditions.

Does OnlineConverter upload my MOV?

Yes. It is an upload-based online converter. If the recording is private, use the browser tool or ffmpeg instead; neither uploads the file.

Can the browser tool select a second audio track in a MOV?

Yes. The panel lists every audio track with language, channels and sample rate. That matters for interviews, screen recordings and multi-language QuickTime files.

Which alternative handles AC-3 or DTS audio?

The browser tool does not. ffmpeg does when built with the relevant decoders. CloudConvert and FreeConvert are server-side and have broader codec coverage; check the specific page before uploading.

Is this list paid placement?

No. This site is one of the tools listed, which is disclosed above. There are no affiliate links or paid placements. Competitor limits come from their public pages and are dated.
