MOV to MP3 on iPhone
iPhone video is a QuickTime MOV with HEVC and AAC. Here is the Safari route to MP3, why some clips have no sound, and when to use a Mac instead.
Tested: 22 October 2026 · WebKit 27.2 mobile viewport · iPhone-style MOV/AAC fixture
iPhone video is usually a .mov container with HEVC video and AAC audio. Save the clip to Files, open the converter in Safari 26+, choose the file and convert. The video track is dropped and the AAC track becomes MP3. Older iOS Safari cannot run the audio decoder.
What is inside an iPhone MOV
A typical iPhone video is a QuickTime container with:
- Video: HEVC (H.265) or H.264, depending on the recording settings.
- Audio: AAC, usually stereo, 44.1 or 48 kHz.
- Metadata: creation time, location (if enabled), orientation.
The converter does not decode the video. It reads the container, finds the audio track, decodes the AAC, and encodes MP3. The video codec — HEVC, H.264, ProRes — does not matter for this path.
The Safari route
- In Photos, open the clip, tap Share → Save to Files.
- Open the converter in Safari 26 or newer.
- Tap the drop area and choose the file from Files.
- Pick a bitrate. 128 kbps is fine for speech; 192 kbps is a good default.
- Convert, then save the MP3 to Files.
Safari 26 is the first version with WebCodecs audio decoding. On an older iOS, the page will say the browser is unsupported. That is a hard limit, not a setting you can change.
When the clip has no sound
The most common reasons:
- Screen recording with the microphone off. Control Center has a microphone toggle; if it was off, the MOV has video only.
- Timelapse. Timelapse clips usually have no audio track.
- A failed external microphone. The video looks fine but the audio track is missing or silent.
- A trimmed clip that cut the audio track. Rare, but some editors can drop the audio stream.
The converter lists the audio tracks and their codecs. If there are none, it refuses the file and says so. It does not produce a silent MP3 and call it a success.
iPhone limits
- Keep Safari in the foreground. iOS may suspend a background tab.
- Watch the memory. A long 4K clip can be larger than the tab can hold.
- Do not lock the screen mid-conversion. The tab may be suspended.
- Use Files, not a Photos-only reference. The file picker needs a file it can read.
When to use a Mac instead
Use a Mac if the clip is longer than a few minutes, if the file is above 1 GB, or if you need to convert several clips. The Mac route is documented in MOV to MP3 on a Mac and the general MP4/MOV Mac guide. The conversion is the same; the difference is memory and how easy it is to keep the process running.
FAQ
Why is my iPhone MOV silent after conversion?
The clip may have no audio track. A screen recording with the microphone off, a timelapse, or a video recorded with a external mic that failed can be silent. The converter lists the audio tracks before conversion and rejects a file with none; it does not write an empty MP3.
Can I convert a MOV from Photos without saving it to Files?
Save it to Files first. Photos does not hand every video to Safari's file picker in the same way, and a large clip is easier to manage as a file. Use Share → Save to Files, then choose that file in Safari.
Does the iPhone record MP3 audio?
No. The camera writes AAC audio inside a QuickTime MOV. Voice Memos writes M4A, which is also AAC. MP3 is not a recording format on iOS; it is a delivery format you create afterwards.
Why is the MOV so much larger than the MP3?
The video track is most of the file. Once the picture is dropped, only the soundtrack remains. A 4K clip can be hundreds of megabytes; the MP3 is a few megabytes.
Can I convert a 4K clip on an iPhone?
Yes, if the phone has enough memory and Safari stays in the foreground. A long 4K clip can exhaust the tab. For anything above a few minutes, a Mac is the safer device.
